Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail

Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail

In 1987, the County acquired the Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail. This trail, part of the former Reading-Columbia rail line, runs for just over two miles between the hamlet of Lancaster Junction and Route 283. Like the Conewago Trail, Lancaster Junction Trail travels through some of Lancaster County’s most scenic farmland and borders Chickies Creek in its northern half.

Conewago Recreation Trail

Conewago Recreation Trail
In 1979, Lancaster County acquired the Conewago Recreation Trail, located between Route 230 and the Lebanon County line, northwest of Elizabethtown. This 5-mile trail, formerly the Cornwall-Lebanon rail line, follows the Conewago Creek through scenic farmland and woodlands.

This trail has well-graded, level surfaces, making it ideal for hiking, jogging, bicycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.

Bigfoot found in Lititz!

It may have been a few years ago… but it makes you wonder what’s in your own back yard. Wonder how much this guy had to drink that night?

Lancaster County Sightings
September 9 2004 near Lititz: Man claims that after watching program on the Outdoor Life Channel, he decided to duplicate the program and broadcast alleged Bigfoot sounds into the wooded area behind his home. After broadcasting, he received several guttural scream like replies.

It gets better, I found this ‘sighting’ via Google Earth! you can download a kmz place file with more than 4,200 Bigfoot sightings! Now, that’s having some time on your hands with nothing better to do…. and then you can go to the source website (Mangani’s Bigfoot Maps) and get the whole thing in other formats and more recently updated too!

View CTS A0.00-A6.66 in Google Earth

I found an extension to ArcMap 9.2 today that allows you to export a feature class directly to Google Earth .kml file. It’s called ‘Export to KML Extension Version 2.3‘ and is published in the public domain by Kevin Martin of the Portland, OR GIS office. So, of course I had to test it out and post the results here. To make use of the trail map file you must first have installed Google Earth. Right-click on the link below and save the target to your hard drive and then double-click it to open the file in Google Earth.

CTS Maps Updated

Gallery - Updated CTS Maps

I was just browsing the Lancaster Hiking Club site and found that the trail maps have been somewhat updated by the club. Three of the maps are still hand drawn but annotation has been done with a computer. Features like parking, camping, and mini marts are called out explicitly. Section B has been replaced entirely. It looks like some of the line work for the trail line has been cleaned up as well.

I better make contact with the folks soon….

Blog by Email Woes

I’ll tell you that WordPress is the best blogging engine out there, but the “blog by email” feature set sucks. What is even worse is that even the rudimentary features that are avilable to make a post via email are totally incompatible with GoDaddy.com web hosting. Something to do with their php config and remote access and whatnot. When I try to execute the wp-mail.php file I just get a server timed out message. I’ve been at it for hours and got nothing… similar to what others have discovered. If anyone out there comes across my message in a bottle about this one please comment.

BTW, I’m also looking for anyone that has any leads on a wordpress client for an MS Smartphone.
